Atrium Health Cabarrus faced a growing crisis: a shortage of local behavioral health facilities left patients in distress awaiting transfer from the emergency department for extended periods of time. Seeking a dignified solution, the hospital secured federal grant funding to develop a specialized Behavioral Health Holding Unit—a therapeutic space that would support patients navigating this crucial transition.
As a trusted design partner, our healthcare practice team worked closely with doctors, nurses and staff to cultivate an environment that equally prioritizes safety and comfort. Collaborative visioning sessions informed key design elements, including durable patient bays and a unique lighting fixture resembling a window, which simulates daylight to foster a natural connection to the outdoors.
Security and efficiency were equally paramount. A centrally located nurse station, enclosed with shatterproof glass, ensures clear sightlines and an open auditory link to patients while safeguarding staff. With space at a premium, the layout also integrates compact medication storage and an internal break space, eliminating the need to exit and re-enter through the emergency department checkpoint.

Designed with healing and autonomy in mind, the unit includes a quiet room with padded surfaces and tamper-proof furniture, providing a retreat for patients experiencing heightened anxiety. A lounge and activity area offers flexible space for crafts, meals and social engagement, encouraging a sense of normalcy.
Furthermore, patient rooms feature tap-activated reading lamps, giving individuals control over their environments, while bathrooms incorporate anti-ligature shower doors with magnetic attachments that break away under excessive force, upholding privacy without risk of harm. A telepsych room also enables seamless virtual consultations, expanding access to mental health professionals.
The 3,300 sq. ft. sanctuary represents a major advancement in behavioral treatment for the region. Thoughtfully balancing protection with independence, it not only enhances patients’ experiences but also alleviates pressure on Atrium Health Cabarrus’ operations—reinforcing a more efficient and compassionate continuum of care for all.
