A Health Professions program like this requires spaces that can easily adapt to evolving methodologies, technologies, healthcare demands, and specialized care needs.
As a result, the facility incorporates a number of key design components such as physical diagnosis and simulated anatomy training spaces with hospital beds; exam tables and attached debrief rooms that also function as 24-hour group study spaces; a physical and occupational therapy area; numerous student breakout spaces; and several multipurpose offices.
Furthermore, the simulated anatomy laboratory features two Anatomage tables that showcase life-size displays of the human body, as well as an anatomy visualization system and a virtual library of human cadavers. These sophisticated tools champion hands-on interaction and help students develop a profound understanding of pathophysiology practices and disease conditions through the dissection of 3D scans.
MEP Solutions for Sustainability
Central to the project’s success is the implementation of strategic mechanical, engineering, and plumbing (MEP) design solutions.
A key aspect of this approach involved leveraging the property’s natural groundwater for direct cooling in a single-pass cycle. This sustainable system replaces traditional refrigerant-based air-cooling methods, leading to substantial long-term cost savings and reducing the building’s carbon footprint.
Additional sustainable MEP solutions included the installation of new fan coil units in repurposed office ceilings, as well as the utilization of existing steam infrastructure for efficient and comfortable climate control throughout the building.
Through strategic programming and seamless MEP integration, this School of Health Professions represents a harmonious blend of preservation and progress, revitalizing underused spaces to meet the evolving needs of healthcare education in the 21st century. It stands as a cornerstone of SBU’s academic offerings, embodying its commitment to excellence and sustainability.
