The original Lake Road Bridge, first constructed in 1988 over the Metro-North Railroad, was deemed unsafe by the Town of New Windsor, NY; the south approach was at a steep grade with a transition at the bridge that restricted sight distance, and vertical clearance over the railroad was substandard.
Design for a new and improved connective structure required permanent easements to accommodate roadway improvements and bridge construction. The road was raised 5’ at the north end of the bridge and the roadway profile was flattened to provide increased vertical clearance and enhanced sight distance. The new bridge consists of prestressed concrete beams and a concrete bridge deck with a span of 80 feet; the substructures are concrete abutments on fill behind MSES retaining walls.
