Lockport Memorial Hospital Opens to Elevate Healthcare Access in Niagara County

LOCKPORT, NY — The highly anticipated Lockport Memorial Hospital officially welcomed its first patients last month, marking a significant milestone for the Niagara County community.

Following the closure of Eastern Niagara Hospital, area residents lacked critical healthcare resources. To address this, the Catholic Health System partnered with CPL to envision a “neighborhood hospital” — a more reliable care model that would leverage the specialties of other Western New York sites to fill local service gaps.

A vital extension of Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston, NY, the 63,000 sq. ft. facility features an 18-bed emergency department; a 10-bed inpatient unit with flexibility to grow as patient volume increases; and a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging and laboratory equipment allowing for CT, digital x-ray, mammography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and MRI procedures.

Additionally, the 30-acre campus includes a 22,646 sq. ft. building, which houses outpatient clinical spaces as well as non-patient departments (such as dietary programs, administrative offices and a pharmacy). This facility also features offices for primary care, women’s health and specialty treatment, dedicated staff support areas, and enhanced mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems.

“Our goal was to establish an adaptable facility that would serve as a long-term solution, benefitting the community for generations to come,” explained CPL Vice President Joe Hanss, AIA, who served as the project’s Principal-in-Charge.

Now complete, Lockport Memorial Hospital promises immediate care for over 80,000 people, along with access to advanced medical and surgical support spanning the entire Catholic Health System.

Funding for the $70 million project came from bond financing, grants and charitable public contributions, as well as a $30 million investment from New York State.

CPL served as the Architect of Record, providing architectural, interior design and permitting services. The firm worked alongside M/E Engineering (Engineering) and Pike Construction Services (Construction Management) to successfully deliver the project.
