Clifton Springs Hospital Unveils Enhanced Emergency Department with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

CLIFTON SPRINGS, NY — On August 30, 2023, CPL joined representatives from Rochester Regional Health (RRH), state officials and members of the local community at a ribbon cutting ceremony commemorating the new Rob and Pamela Sands Emergency Department at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic in Clifton Springs, NY.

Established in 1972, Clifton Springs—an integral part of the RRH system—has since evolved into a modern healthcare nexus. However, recognizing gaps in local services, RRH partnered with CPL to design a new building that would better accommodate emergency surges in medical and behavioral health and deliver the highest caliber of care to residents, from within their home community.

The redesigned emergency department addresses patients’ needs with a new addition that includes the Finger Lakes region’s first Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), creating a total 9,000 sq. ft. of space. Key features include an expansive waiting area, private patient treatment rooms,  secure behavioral health rooms with observation spaces, trauma care technology, heightened security protocols and an upgraded decontamination room. Additionally, the facility’s design prioritizes anti-ligature elements to ensure patient and staff safety.

“Together with the RRH staff, we focused on designing a comforting healing environment for full-service behavioral and medical care during emergency health crises, while incorporating safe technologies for staff treatment,” said CPL Architect Jennifer LaChance, AIA, LEED AP, who served as Project Manager. “Aside from elevating patient experiences, the new space will also support medical practitioners with a more effective layout that streamlines daily workflows.”

The ribbon cutting for the $4.3M emergency department marked the culmination of the hospital’s seven-year “medical village” initiative, which involved numerous new construction and renovation projects aimed at refining patient care, such as a surgical suite, a post-anesthesia care unit, multi-specialty clinics, a cardiology rehabilitation center and a cafeteria.

Funding for the work came from the generous contributions of the Sands Family Supporting Foundation and the support of the Clifton Springs community.

Serving as Architect of Record, CPL provided architectural, interior design and engineering services, working alongside DGA Builders, LLC (Construction Manager) to deliver the project.

The revitalized emergency department officially began accepting patients on September 6, 2023.
