RWJBarnabas Health’s Community Medical Center stands as one of southern New Jersey’s most visited hospitals. Serving a growing and diverse patient population, the institution has become a cornerstone of advanced care, particularly in high-demand specialties like cardiology.

To continue meeting this increasing demand, RWJBarnabas Health engaged CPL’s Healthcare Practice team to expand its cardiology services, which include the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure—a leading-edge, minimally invasive solution for heart valve patients.

The project aimed to transform an existing shell space on the hospital’s first floor into an advanced Class 3 hybrid operating room and Cath Lab. This involved demolishing all existing rooms in the area and removing portions of the perimeter wall to create space for new egress points and staff corridor doors.

Given the highly specialized nature of the Cath Lab, a new HVAC air distribution system and ductwork were essential to maintaining the strict environmental controls required for advanced cardiovascular procedures. This system ensures optimal airflow, temperature regulation and sterile conditions, all of which are critical for patient safety and medical staff efficiency during complex operations.

To further support the lab’s advanced needs, we upgraded the medical gas systems and air exchanges and implemented specialized shielding to preserve a sterile environment. We also worked closely with Philips Medical and Merge to integrate ceiling-mounted C-arm imaging equipment, booms for carrying the hemodynamic monitoring system, emergency power receptacles and overhead lighting, creating a fully functional and top-tier operating space.

Our design approach prioritized streamlining medical staff workflows and optimizing patient pathways. This led to the creation of dedicated control and documentation stations to improve staff access to essential equipment and electronic systems. For patients, distinct pre- and post-procedure areas were designed to reduce transport times, enabling quicker transitions between treatment phases. Additionally, an adjacent equipment room was strategically positioned to maintain uninterrupted data flow, ensuring both staff and patients benefit from a cohesive care environment.

This high-performing Cath Lab further strengthens RWJBarnabas Health’s ability to provide advanced cardiology services and meet the growing needs of the southern New Jersey community. The enhanced space allows patients to receive critical, life-saving care in an environment built for efficiency, precision and optimal outcomes.
