Having previously completed the site feasibility study, our Community & Culture Practice team was re-engaged to lead design. Situated within a floodplain, the project demanded a resilient approach: the building was elevated and oriented to safeguard key functions from potential flooding, ensuring continuity during severe weather events.

A high-performance envelope clad in terracotta rain screen panels provides durability, expressive character and long-term value. Inside, the layout supports the daily rhythm of transit operations. A full maintenance shop at ground level serves as the core, where buses are serviced and routes begin and end. Above, the drivers’ level features distinct locker and break rooms for different union groups—designed to promote equity, comfort and expediency.
At the building’s front, welcoming public and administrative offices form the civic face of the organization. These spaces accommodate ticket purchases, eligibility testing for riders with disabilities, board meetings and flexible gathering areas that strengthen engagement between the Authority and the community it serves. Forward vehicle flow, clear pedestrian paths and mindful separation of functions further enhance safety and navigation for all visitors.

The facility was also envisioned as a model of sustainability from the outset. Achieving Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Gold Certification, it incorporates a green roof, rainwater management and energy-conscious HVAC and building systems that reduce operating costs while improving comfort and air quality for occupants.
Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, it exemplifies how thoughtful investment can advance both environmental stewardship and community well-being. More than a workplace, the Authority supports an efficient, modern transit system and enriches the daily experience of those who maintain and rely on it—serving as a cornerstone of Greensboro’s interconnected future.
