SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The American Public Works Association (APWA) has selected the Saratoga Springs City Hall restoration project as its 2022 Historical Restoration/Preservation Project of the Year for the Small Cities / Rural Communities division.
The $11 million project encompassed transformative renovations for the 60,000 sq. ft. facility, which suffered extensive water damage after a lightning strike started a fire in 2018.
To promote long-term safety and sustainability and inclusivity, CPL integrated low-energy LED lighting, lightning prevention and contemporary alarm systems; added new handicap-accessible elevators and washrooms; removed remaining hazardous materials; and recreated antique finishes, trim profiles and fixtures, revealing the building’s unique character and restoring its historic integrity.
The team also reorganized the city’s department layout, allowing for the significant expansion of the Courts Administration on the second floor, and redesigned the building’s Music Hall, implementing acoustic improvements to ensure the space is well-equipped to host future events. Final designs for the project exceeded LEED Silver certification requirements.
The APWA Historical Restoration/Preservation Project of the Year Award recognizes excellence in the management of public works projects that embody creativity, ingenuity and efficiency, have a profound impact on the community and involve the restoration and adaptive reuse of historic structures.
Saratoga Springs City Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has served as a nexus for local growth and development since its construction in 1871; the completed preservation effort guarantees that the building will continue to enrich community life for decades to come.
CPL will receive the prestigious designation at the APWA Awards Recognition Ceremony, to be held in conjunction with the organization’s 2022 PWX Convention at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, NC, on August 29.
The project was previously honored by the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation Awards Committee.
