As part of this expansion, the project’s main goal was to create a second treatment space equipped with the Varian Halcyon Linear Accelerator (LINAC). This system enhances the precision of radiation therapy, allowing the medical center to offer more advanced and effective cancer care.

To accommodate the new linear accelerator system, we converted an existing High-Dose Radiation (HDR) vault into a fully customized treatment room. This involved removing the space’s concrete slab, metal stud walls, and gypsum board to fully customize it for the new LINAC equipment. Moreover, we installed new conduit runs for efficient power distribution and reconfigured the HVAC system to better handle the increased heat load generated by the LINAC, ensuring a temperature-controlled environment for both patient comfort and staff efficiency.
To ensure everyone’s safety, we upgraded radiation shielding in key places, including the exterior wall, control room and adjacent CT-Sim room. Our team also worked closely with vendors and facility stakeholders to integrate complex imaging equipment, overhead lighting, and monitoring systems, resulting in a fully functional treatment space.
Additional design enhancements included a revamped control room strategically positioned to optimize workflow, along with dedicated equipment storage areas for quick access to essential electronics and medical equipment. These thoughtful elements not only improve day-to-day functionality but also support the seamless integration of advanced technology in a demanding healthcare environment.
Today, the expanded linear accelerator doubles Jersey City Medical Center’s ability to offer advanced cancer care, ensuring more patients have access to life-saving treatments. This collaboration not only reinforces the hospital’s commitment to delivering exceptional healthcare but also positions it as a leader in the fight against cancer.
