As one of the nation’s largest breast cancer treatment facilities, the Breast Center at RWJBarnabas Health’s Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) serves over 65,000 people annually. To better support its growing patient base and uphold its reputation for medical excellence, the institution underwent a transformative, four-phase renovation aimed at boosting comfort and broadening capabilities.
Our healthcare practice team was brought in to revitalize the existing ambulatory care clinic, balancing functional improvements with an elevated patient journey. Central to this effort was the creation of a dedicated MRI suite, offering seamless access to advanced diagnostic imaging and women’s health under one roof. The addition of a dedicated women’s MRI machine filled a critical service gap, enabling on-site scans without delays and streamlining patient flow for faster, more efficient care.
Thoughtfully envisioned with visitors’ wellbeing in mind, the interior marries the latest equipment with a soothing, spa-like ambiance—cool blue and purple hues, accent lighting and LED enhancements were intentionally chosen to help reduce anxiety during treatment.
In addition, we strategically reallocated space to expand the registration area, introducing private cubicles and contemporary finishes for a more welcoming atmosphere. Staff zones were also upgraded with 10 new offices and a break room to accommodate the evolving medical team and simplify daily workflows.
The final phase reimagined the waiting room as a hotel-inspired space, complete with wood ceiling details, soft lighting and curated artwork—ensuring patients feel at ease from the moment they arrive.
Despite the social distancing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project remained on track through virtual meetings and 3D visualization tools, keeping stakeholders fully immersed. The result is a modernized center that blends emerging healthcare technologies with tranquil surroundings, uplifting the treatment experience for patients, families and staff alike.
