Nestled in the heart of Asheboro, NC, McCrary Park stands as a cherished symbol of the City’s enduring passion for baseball, steeped in decades of local tradition and community spirit. Established in 1946, this venue has hosted countless games for local high schools, the American Legion and the Asheboro Zookeepers.

Seeking to preserve its legacy for future generations, city officials entrusted our Community Practice team to envision a comprehensive revitalization plan. Partnering with construction company Rodgers Builders and a team of consultants, we devised a strategic multi-phase plan with two goals: to restore McCrary Park’s worn-out baseball field and preserve the venue’s historical charm.
Completed during the offseason to minimize the disruption of seasonal play, the first phase focused on replacing the natural grass field with artificial turf for a safe playing surface that could withstand prolonged heavy use. New dugouts, site walls, a scoreboard, a batter’s eye and updated outfield fencing were also installed to enhance gameplay conditions further.
In later phases, upgrades beyond the playing surface were made to elevate the experience for both players and spectators. This included a raised concourse with custom grandstands accommodating 800 patrons, along with additional bleachers along the first base line for another 700, ensuring ample and comfortable viewing opportunities for all.
A classic masonry backstop wall with protective padding enhances player safety and visibility, while a dedicated beer garden and outdoor patio area provide spectators with a social hub complete with food services. Other amenities include a lot with protected safety netting for the venue’s youngest fans, a food truck corral area equipped with utilities for diverse dining options and advanced audio and lighting technologies.
Debuting in time for the Asheboro Zookeepers’ fall baseball league, the revitalized McCrary Park demonstrates the importance of blending modern amenities with historical integrity. Beyond greatly enriching the player’s experience and enhancing spectator enjoyment, it reaffirms the park’s role as a symbol of community pride and unity in Asheboro for generations to come.
