Cleveland State University Lift Up Vikes! Food Pantry Renovation

The challenge of food insecurity on college campuses has become increasingly urgent, with studies showing that a significant number of students struggle to access adequate nutrition. Cleveland State University (CSU) in Cleveland, OH, exemplifies proactive efforts to address this issue through its Lift Up Vikes! Food Pantry (LUV), which serves approximately 8,100 students annually and distributes over 112,480 pounds of food each year.

As demand for the program grew, CSU recognized the need to upgrade its original facility. Partnering with CPL’s Higher Education Practice team, the 1,470 sq. ft. space within Berkman Hall was enhanced and expanded to feature a larger food pantry/market, a versatile resource center and a welcoming relaxation area.

The new layout of the food pantry mimics a grocery store experience with multiple coolers, shelves and clearly marked sections, promoting a dignified and user-friendly environment. Vibrant yellow hues, circular light fixtures and strategic lighting add visual appeal to the space.

The inviting ambiance extends into the resource center and relaxation areas, which feature carefully chosen interior design elements like a playful “starburst” pattern, sturdy and functional tables and chairs and plenty of seating for respite. For a touch of school pride, a striking mural designed by CSU students adorns the common area’s West wall.

Designed with flexibility in mind, the upgraded space supports a range of functions beyond food distribution, including educational sessions and community events. This thoughtful approach ensures that LUV not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also serves as a vital community resource for CSU students and the community at large.
