Renovations Spur Enhanced Learning Experiences

Recess with friends, book fairs and favorite teachers are among fond memories made during early years of education. The recent transformation of the Allegany-Limestone Elementary School has given students an impressionable academic experience that sparks an enhanced joy for learning.

Inside and out, the beloved grammar school was beginning to age with an outdated, institutional “look and feel” and a disenchanted aesthetic that lacked school spirit.

“The district had a very distinct project vision for improvements,” recalled CPL Senior Project Manager, Ryne Wight, RA. “They wanted to incorporate some changes that would not only bolster their mission, but also complement the celebrated enhancements we had previously designed for their companion high school.”

Creative development kicked off with intense collaboration, which yielded extensively detailed visual concepts driven by district stakeholders. They envisioned a whimsical, fun learning environment filled with bright colors that would fuel engagement at every turn, for everyone.

These concepts began with the school’s lobby and entryways. Vibrantly branded graphics and spirit-boosting color selections were strategically placed throughout, igniting Gator pride and welcoming all.

Moving through the building, clever wayfinding was utilized on corridor walls and floors as well as in key program spaces to further spark curiosity and shore up creativity.

One of the more impactful transformations was the reimagining of the school’s library to serve as a modern media center with a larger-than-life entrance to draw students inside.

Similarly, special attention was given to an existing sensory room with the addition of new, captivating sensory elements such as a “tree” ceiling support structure and an intriguing I-Spy window.

Other rigorous improvements included the conversion of an unused classroom into a high-performing maker space, the inclusion of a rock-climbing wall in the gymnasium, and a beautiful courtyard with limestone seats and a “tree” shade canopy. The design team also facilitated LED lighting replacements as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing (M/E/P) upgrades throughout the facility.

All young minds need strong foundations to realize their potential. Today, the Allegany-Limestone Elementary School offers students the inclusive educational space they need to learn effectively and create joyful memories to treasure for a lifetime.
