As student interest surged and workforce needs intensified across Georgia, the University of North Georgia (UNG) understood that expanding opportunity in the region would require not only additional space, but greater collaboration. The Blue Ridge Campus, once a modest outpost, had quickly outpaced its facilities as demand accelerated for nursing, education and dual-enrollment pathways.

David E. Ralston Hall—named for the late alumnus and Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, whose advocacy was instrumental to UNG’s growth—embodies that spirit of partnership. The 22,427 sq. ft. facility is a shared investment between UNG, state officials and area residents to strengthen access to higher education closer to home.

Working closely with university administrators, our Higher Education practice team helped envision the building as a multi-use environment where academic excellence and professional development intersect. At its core are three advanced healthcare simulation labs for the College of Health Sciences & Professions, equipped to provide nursing students with immersive, real-world training.
Additionally, four flexible classrooms extend the campus’ reach, supporting teacher preparation programs and enabling high school students to earn college credit without leaving Blue Ridge.

Public engagement was also woven into the project’s DNA. A 3,800 sq. ft. conference center—complete with a warming kitchen and adaptable event space for up to 200 guests—welcomes civic leaders, businesses and cultural organizations into the heart of campus. The venue is complemented by student commons, including an open lounge, computer lab and breakout rooms designed to foster both focused study and informal connection.

Architecturally, the building draws from the region’s timber vernacular, visually linking it to UNG’s flagship facility while upholding a cohesive identity for the burgeoning campus.
Today, David E. Ralston Hall stands as a forward-looking addition to Blue Ridge, equipping the next generation for success while offering a dynamic hub for civic life. More than a building, it demonstrates the impact of cross-disciplinary cooperation and honors the enduring legacy of the leader whose vision made it all possible.
