As enrollment across Ossining Union Free School District continued to grow, the community identified a need to expand capacity at Park Early Childhood Center (ECC) while improving overall functionality. From the outset, the building was envisioned to grow vertically, with the first floor completed in 2018 intentionally designed to support a future second-floor addition.

Our K-12 practice team was engaged to design the long-planned expansion along with critical infrastructure upgrades. Although the building had been structurally prepared, the existing layout posed challenges—particularly a winding floor plan and awkward connection points that disrupted circulation. A key design objective was to resolve these issues and create a seamless, intuitive relationship between the original construction and the new addition.
The second-floor layout mirrors the organization below, reinforcing clarity and consistency for young learners and staff. Targeted adjustments, including a modest classroom bump-out, allowed the team to smooth problematic corners and introduce a small sensory-focused space that enriches the learning environment. A new stair and elevator core improves accessibility, supports furniture movement and strengthens vertical circulation throughout the building.

Programmatically, the expansion emphasizes bright, engaging and age-appropriate spaces tailored to early childhood education. Each classroom includes a dedicated bathroom and integrated water fountain, promoting independence for Pre-K students. Color, graphics and interior branding further enhance the experience, creating a cheerful, welcoming environment that reflects the building’s exclusive focus on early learners.
Beyond classrooms, the project also addressed a critical operational need through a cafeteria expansion. By repurposing an existing classroom, the dining area was enlarged to reduce lunch periods from four to three—streamlining scheduling and restoring lunch to a more appropriate time frame for students and staff.

With tight site constraints and an active school year to consider, construction was carefully phased. Disruptive work was concentrated during summer months to minimize impact, while behind-the-scenes system upgrades—including new electrical service, an exterior transformer, rooftop cooling units and mechanical improvements—ensure the facility can support both current needs and future growth.
Delivered in close collaboration with the district and long-term construction partners, the reimagined Park ECC provides a flexible, vibrant and efficient environment that supports enrollment growth while reinforcing the district’s commitment to exceptional early childhood education.
