The City of Atlanta’s Northside Drive Pedestrian Bridge creates a critical connection between Atlanta’s Westside neighborhoods, downtown and MARTA transit while providing a safer, more efficient way for pedestrians to navigate one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Located adjacent to Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the Georgia World Congress Center, the approximately 1,200-foot bridge and ramp system carries pedestrians over Northside Drive, helping separate foot traffic from vehicles and improve mobility during major events and periods of peak activity.
CPL provided civil/site, structural and transportation engineering services as part of the design-build team, working within an accelerated project schedule and a highly complex urban environment. The design required extensive coordination among the City of Atlanta, GDOT, MARTA, the Georgia World Congress Center and the Mercedes-Benz Stadium construction team to integrate the new infrastructure with surrounding roadways, transit connections, pedestrian routes and ongoing development.
CPL’s engineering scope extended beyond the pedestrian bridge to improvements along Northside Drive. Site investigations determined that conventional asphalt rehabilitation would not provide the long-term performance needed for a roadway regularly subjected to heavy vehicle loads. The team instead developed a full-depth pavement reconstruction solution, removing the existing pavement and subbase and establishing a new roadway foundation and asphalt system designed for greater durability and long-term performance.
Designed in accordance with AASHTO LRFD requirements and Georgia Standard Specifications, the completed project strengthens multimodal connectivity, improves pedestrian safety and supports more efficient movement around one of Atlanta’s most active sports and entertainment destinations.
The project was recognized by the American Public Works Association, Georgia Chapter, as a 2019 Project of the Year in the $5–$25 million category.
