Lake Wales, Florida is one of many rural communities that have historically faced limited access to nearby healthcare. To address this, Lakeland Regional partnered with CPL’s Healthcare Practice team—building on experience from two prior projects—to design a new clinic that brings essential services closer to home.

The project involved transforming a former gym in a shopping center into a fully functioning outpatient clinic. The interior was completely gutted, leaving only the building shell.
Our team led interior design and construction oversight throughout the project, introducing new ceilings, lighting, and casework aligned with Lakeland Regional’s colors and brand identity. The result is a cohesive space that supports a comfortable patient experience.

The clinic is organized to support a clear patient journey, from arrival and check-in through exam and treatment. Key spaces include a waiting area and check-in lobby, exam rooms, an urgent care area, and a point-of-care laboratory, all centered around a central nursing station. Support spaces include areas dedicated to storage, dictation, staff breaks and IT/electrical.

Efficiency guided design decisions throughout. The layout promotes clear, intuitive movement for both patients and staff, reducing friction in day-to-day operations. Wayfinding strategies reinforce this clarity, including visual cues at key decision points.

Blue arches highlight the nursing station as a central reference point, helping patients and staff orient themselves within the space, while coordinated flooring and wall patterns in exam rooms and vitals alcoves further support navigation.
The Lake Wales Clinic represents a shift in how care can be delivered in communities with limited healthcare access. Rather than relying on new construction, the project repositions an existing building into a functional outpatient facility that supports modern clinical needs. It reflects how thoughtful design can strengthen both care delivery and the daily experience of those who depend on it.
