Following the approval of a $40 million bond referendum in 2018, the City of Brookhaven prioritized improvements across five public parks—each selected to advance livability, connectivity and access to recreation. Ashford Park, already a beloved destination for young families, was identified as a key site where strategic improvements could enhance daily use, expand programming potential and increase long-term value for the community.

Our landscape architecture team approached the design with a clear focus: to amplify the park’s role as a dynamic community space while preserving the character and ecological integrity of the site. Informed by topographic analysis and mature tree coverage, we integrated new amenities to work within the natural context, maximizing shade, comfort and long-term sustainability.
At the core of the park’s transformation is a vibrant splash pad with a sunburst pattern—serving as both an engaging summer play space and a small seasonal amphitheater for performances and gatherings. We specified a cushioned, slip-resistant surface to ensure inclusive, year-round functionality, which balances safety for young children with reduced maintenance demands for city staff.

To support expanded programming and family use, a new hillside pavilion was strategically sited adjacent to the play area, offering shaded, elevated views that encourage both casual use and organized events. Its orientation enhances natural surveillance while seamlessly tying into the site’s existing trail loop.

Connectivity improvements were also central to our design strategy. We extended the park’s hardscape trail network to unify new and existing features and introduced a pedestrian bridge over a natural swale, enhancing circulation and ADA access to all park amenities without disrupting ecological flow. Moreover, the pavilion’s ascending stairs were designed with low riser, ramp steps to ensure easy access for small children, further enhancing accessibility.
Throughout the project, we worked in close collaboration with the City of Brookhaven and their program manager, engaging in regular coordination to align design intent with operational goals, budget constraints and community feedback. This integrated process ensured that each design element met current needs while allowing for future adaptability.
Today, Ashford Park stands as a revitalized, high-impact community asset, welcoming increased daily and seasonal use, enriching family life and reinforcing Brookhaven’s investment in parks as essential public infrastructure.
