From the outset, we partnered closely with the Aquarium and regional ecological organizations to envision a living collection that fosters discovery, interaction and environmental awareness. Every design decision was rooted in this shared goal: to cultivate meaningful, lasting connections between visitors and the natural world around them.
Upon entry, guests are greeted by an inviting lobby that sets the tone for the experience. Natural stone walls and aquatic-themed accents create a welcoming threshold into the exhibit space.

Beyond the lobby, Great Lakes 360 features 16 distinct habitats showcasing native species such as turtles, frogs, sturgeons, sea lamprey and more. These exhibits are designed with elements like interactive touch tanks, tactile displays and educational panels to offer multiple modes of engagement, appealing to learners of all ages and abilities.
Water-inspired textures, soft wood accents and a green-blue color palette further amplify the exhibits’ depth and appeal, reinforcing an engaging atmosphere. Additionally, suspended overhead, a “Sky River” feature provides a unique visual and sensory dimension with an ambient waterway that flows above the exhibit floor.

Functionality was equally prioritized with dimmable lighting supporting the well-being of sensitive species, UV-protective films helping prevent algae growth, and rubber flooring improving safety and durability in high-moisture areas.

At the heart of the building, a flexible classroom serves as a multipurpose hub for lectures, workshops and activities. This space supports the Aquarium’s commitment to ongoing education about protecting this aquatic ecosystem.
By blending immersive storytelling, ecological accuracy and universal accessibility, Great Lakes 360 does more than house aquatic life—it creates a thriving environment for both animals and people. Through thoughtful material choices, responsive environmental controls and interactive features, the exhibit supports the well-being of its species while deepening public understanding of the Great Lakes’ fragile ecosystems.
