FirstHealth Celebrates New Comprehensive Cancer Center with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

PINEHURST, NC — On March 7, 2023, CPL joined representatives from FirstHealth of the Carolinas, local officials and members of the Moore County community at a ribbon cutting ceremony commemorating FirstHealth’s new Cancer Center in Pinehurst, NC.

FirstHealth is a private, non-profit healthcare system that provides a range of services, including medical, surgical, emergency, behavioral health, rehabilitation and wellness care, to residents of North Carolina’s Sandhills region. Its vast network spans 15 surrounding counties, making it the largest healthcare provider in the area.

Following a thorough review of national healthcare architecture firms, CPL was awarded the design of this 120,000 sq. ft. facility for the system’s flagship Moore Regional Hospital campus.

The new cancer center is organized on four levels, each with 30,000 sq. ft., consolidating all cancer treatment services into one comprehensive location. The interior provides state-of-the-art spaces for chemotherapy infusion, gynecologic oncology, medical oncology, multidisciplinary clinics, palliative care, laboratories, clinical trials and radiation oncology, with two linear accelerators.

Additionally, the facility boasts two healing gardens—one situated on the ground level at the main entry and the other on the second-floor rooftop, adjacent to the chemotherapy infusion area. These gardens offer patients and staff unobstructed views and access to natural landscapes and greenery to enhance treatment outcomes.

Other support areas include an onsite pharmacy, a bistro and a visitor resource center, and on the fourth floor, a wellness hub will connect patients with fitness activities and spaces for art therapy, music, yoga and meditation.

“The goal was to create a nexus that offers the highest quality of holistic cancer care for patients, their families and caregivers, and which is convenient and easy to navigate,” said CPL Project Manager Robin Washco, AIA. “Our wish is that no one ever needs to receive treatment at the center, but if they do, we hope the environment supports a sense of confidence and tranquility as they embark on their healing journey.”

Funding for the work came from the Foundation of FirstHealth, which secured almost $30M in donations, with individual contributions ranging from $1M to $25M.

Serving as Architect of Record, CPL worked alongside Brasfield & Gorrie (General Contracting), Adams Electric (Electrical Engineering), Ivey Mechanical (Mechanical Engineering), Precision Plumbing (Plumbing Engineering) and Precision Walls, Inc. (Drywall Services) to plan and deliver the project.

The $68M facility will open to the public on March 27, 2023.
