Designing for Wellness: Joel Trexler’s Blueprint for Patient-Centric Healthcare Architecture

Graphic has Joel Trexler on the left, a bald man wearing glasses and a plaid blazer and tie. On the right it reads "Healthcare is a complex field with many moving parts, but that's what makes it exciting." At the bottom it reads "Joel P. Trexler, ACHA, AIA, ASHE, NCARB Vice President"

Joel P. Trexler, ACHA, AIA, ASHE, NCARB knows firsthand the impact that thoughtful design can have on healing. As a college student watching his mother battle breast cancer, he realized how well-planned spaces could ease the stress of both patients and caregivers.

That personal experience sparked a passion for healthcare architecture, which has shaped his 30+ year career. Now, as a Vice President at CPL, Trexler works alongside clients to create transformative environments that enhance treatment experiences, empower caregivers and drive operational efficiency.

After earning his B.Arch. from Temple University, Trexler joined a healthcare-focused firm, where he became captivated by the challenge of balancing patient needs, agency regulations and technology. His dedication earned him board certification with the American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA)—a distinction held by only 19 in Pennsylvania— and led to his role as Vice President of JPT Architects, which CPL acquired in 2024.

This integration has transformed our healthcare team. By expanding JPT’s services to include MEP and structural engineering alongside architecture and civil design, we now offer more comprehensive support for Trexler’s long-standing clients, like RWJBarnabas Health, Penn State Health and Allegheny Health Network.

“Our united team provides a deeper bench of talent and resources, allowing us to take on larger, high-impact projects—from cardiac care centers to full-service hospitals—that deliver even greater value to our clients,” Trexler notes.

In his day to day, Trexler is focused on nurturing strong client relationships and leads project teams to envision spaces that put people first.

By engaging directly with stakeholders—such as doctors, nurses, patients and families—through focus groups, he gathers crucial insights that inform adaptable, streamlined designs. His work also incorporates evidence-based design elements like natural light, noise control, strategic layouts and accessibility, all aimed at reducing stress and enhancing well-being for patients, staff and visitors.

This collaborative process, now strengthened by the additional expertise of our Community, Healthcare, K-12 and Higher Education teams, empowers tailored solutions for every healthcare need.

Trexler’s approach is exemplified by the ongoing Cath Lab relocation at Trinitas Regional Medical Center. Working closely with nurses and staff, our Healthcare Practice team redesigned the space with a streamlined layout that reduces travel time between critical areas. Plans also call for high-efficiency systems for improved air quality and a more comfortable environment for all.

Sustainability is another cornerstone of Trexler’s design philosophy. Given that hospitals operate 24/7 and are significant energy consumers, reducing their environmental impact is essential.

This viewpoint was put into action at the RWJBarnabas Health Community Medical Center’s Cath Lab, where our team installed a new HVAC system and upgraded ductwork to improve airflow and boost energy efficiency, all within an existing shell space.

Looking ahead, Trexler is committed to mentoring the next generation of architects and designers at CPL, looking to shape a future where patient-centric healthcare environments remain agile and impactful.

“Healthcare is a complex field with many moving parts, but that’s what makes it exciting,” Trexler adds. “Our mission is to fit these pieces together, creating spaces that not only meet today’s needs, but also set a new standard for patient care for generations to come.”
