Rochester, NY — CPL, a full-service architectural and engineering design firm, is pleased to welcome Doug Spies, MHA, AIA, ACHA, NCARB, CSI-CDT, LEED AP, as Vice President, Southeast Regional Healthcare leader.
Doug brings more than 30 years of leadership as both a board-certified healthcare architect and healthcare executive. Having served on both the client and consultant sides, he offers a uniquely informed perspective that strengthens CPL’s healthcare practice. A collaborative and strategic leader, Doug is known for cultivating strong partnerships with clients and project teams.

Serving as a key advisor to healthcare leaders, Spies brings expertise in regional strategic planning, large-scale capital planning, hospital and departmental sub-specialties, and systemwide operational planning—helping organizations make informed decisions that balance clinical needs, operational efficiency, and long-term value.

Doug joins CPL from Gresham Smith, where he served as Senior Vice President and Program Director of Advisory Services. He holds a Master of Healthcare Administration from Walden University, and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Illinois-Chicago. He is an active industry leader, serving as co-chair of the 20th Vanderbilt HCDC Symposium, the Association of Medical Facilities Professionals (Founding Member and Board Programming Chair), the American College of Healthcare Architects, and the American Society of Healthcare Engineers. He is a regular contributor to Becker’s and serves on the ASHE PDC abstract committee.
