City of Lackawanna Breaks Ground on New City Hall

LACKAWANNA, NY – On October 30, 2024, CPL joined Mayor Annette Iafallo and City, County and State officials in breaking ground on the future Lackawanna City Hall. This highly anticipated project will replace the city’s existing 1924 municipal building, which has fallen into disrepair and no longer accommodates the needs of Lackawanna’s growing community.

The project’s vision centers on transforming an 11,000 sq. ft. vacant structure on South Park Avenue into a 20,000 sq. ft. multifunctional facility. The new City Hall will provide residents with a more functional, modern space to engage with local government and access essential services.

Designed with a community-focused approach, the new building will feature dedicated municipal spaces, public service areas, and queuing zones to improve visitor flow. Separate entrances for staff will also be included to help alleviate congestion.

Incorporating elements of Lackawanna’s heritage, the main entrance will feature a natural stone wall adorned with curated historic photographs, creating a visual journey through the city’s legacy. This space will also lend itself to floor-to-ceiling glass windows, vaulted ceilings and open sightlines to create a sense of accessibility and connection.

“Municipal buildings are the heart of our communities, fostering social ties and a sense of belonging,” noted Marie Carone, AIA, Senior Principal at CPL. “The new City Hall will not only strengthen civic pride and beautify the area but also encourage future investment, creating a lasting, welcoming landmark for residents.”

Moreover, the building will incorporate climate-resilient features like geothermal heating and cooling, with accommodations for future solar installations. These sustainable elements are designed to boost the facility’s disaster hardiness while reducing its carbon footprint and long-term energy costs.

Serving as the Architect of Record and Construction Manager, CPL is working with Resetarits Construction (General Contractor), John W. Danforth (Mechanical Engineering Contractor) and CIR Electrical (Electrical Contractor) to construct and deliver this $13.1 million project.

Completion of the new Lackawanna City Hall is slated for 2026.
