FirstHealth Breaks Ground on New Cancer Center

PINEHURST, NC — A new cancer center in Moore County is officially under construction after FirstHealth of the Carolinas broke ground on Thursday, May 27, 2021. The four-story, 120,000 sq. ft. facility is expected to open to patients in early 2023, on the campus of Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

“This project is a real gamechanger for the Sandhills region,” said CPL Architect and Project Manager, Robin Washco, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP. “From day one, our goal was to design a facility that could ultimately serve as a hub of state-of-the-art cancer care, from early diagnosis to quality treatment. The groundbreaking marks a huge milestone for FirstHealth and I’m excited to see our team’s design come to fruition.”

As an independent healthcare system, FirstHealth of the Carolinas serves 15-counties in central North Carolina. While the region’s population has grown, so too has the cancer rate.

Once completed, the new facility will bring together all of FirstHealth’s outpatient cancer treatments and support services to a single location. It will also house palliative care services, research and clinical trials, navigation and support services for patients and caregivers, nutrition services and a dedicated wellness center.

With an emphasis on enhanced collaboration, the CPL design team utilized an integrated project delivery (IPD) method―a collaborative approach that unites all parties, including the architect, engineers, owner and contractor, right at the project’s inception.  Working alongside the design-build partner, Brasfield & Gorrie, who assumes the role of the General Contractor, construction is anticipated to continue through late 2022.

“Our entire team is incredibly proud of this project and we look forward to seeing this all-encompassing facility become a beacon of healing and hope for patients in Moore County and beyond,” added Washco.
