The Colleton County Parks and Recreation Facility

Whether it’s a community health center, school gymnasium, field house or local sports complex, facilities that encourage a healthy and active lifestyle for all are important for the human experience.

The Colleton County Parks and Recreation Center, located at 280 Recreation Lane in Walterboro, SC, is the perfect example of a facility that is both connective and functional for County residents of all ages.

In an effort to further enhance recreational choices offered to the community, Colleton County embarked on a significant renovation and expansion of their existing facility. The CPL team was selected to conduct a comprehensive review of the seven-acre site and ultimately provide architectural, M/E/P engineering and interior design services to better accommodate a range of existing and new activities.

“The project included an expansion of about 17,500-square-feet, which almost doubled the size of the existing facility,” said Rachel Nilson, CPL Architect and Project Manager. “We were able to add a second gym, a new fitness center, locker rooms with shower facilities and a new lobby space.”

CPL also introduced a fun, water play environment to the site with the design of a new splash pad adjacent to the building.

“The County expressed the importance of further attracting families and younger community members,” Nilson added. “The splash pad does just that by offering inventive water-based activities for children of all ages.”

In addition to the expansion, several cosmetic improvements were made to existing facilities to give the entire building a fresh, modern look. Construction phasing allowed for continued use of those facilities throughout the duration of the project.

Since the project’s completion in June 2019, the County has seen a significant increase in gym memberships and overall facility usage.

“The Park is definitely a huge economic driver for the County,” said Nilson. “Our team was happy to help design solutions that aligned with their mission to connect their community to wellness, the outdoors and lifelong learning.”
