Alfred University Breaks Ground on Saxon Hill Sports Complex

ALFRED, NY — On May 9, 2024, the CPL team joined Alfred University (AU) officials and members of the local community to celebrate the groundbreaking of the highly anticipated Saxon Hill Sports Complex.

Saxon Hill, to be constructed approximately three miles south of campus, will expand AU’s intercollegiate athletics offerings, significantly increasing student enrollment and supporting student retention efforts. CPL’s Higher Education Practice team has been working with the university to plan and design it since 2017.

Spanning more than 35 acres, the complex will feature a grass rugby field, a synthetic turf baseball field and a multipurpose turf field encircled by a 400-meter eight-lane track, catering to soccer, lacrosse and more. Additionally, a dynamic sports center will serve as the central hub for athletes and spectators alike.

In addition to the athletic spaces, the complex will include an array of supporting facilities, such as locker rooms, training areas, concessions, offices, assembly spaces and bathrooms. Integrated press boxes, scoreboards and lighting systems will enhance the venue’s capacity to host high-profile events and competitions.

“Our goal is to create a dynamic environment that meets the current needs of AU’s athletic programs while nurturing a sense of community and excitement for athletes and spectators alike,” explained Ryne Wight, RA, who served as CPL’s Project Manager.

Serving as Architect of Record, CPL provided comprehensive planning, architectural, engineering and design services, and will collaborate with LeChase Construction (Contractor) to complete the project.

Scheduled for public opening in early 2026, the $28 million project marks the beginning of a promising, long-term partnership between CPL and AU.
