Cardiovascular Institute Electrophysiology Lab Renovation

‹ Portfolio

Allegheny Health Network’s (AHN) Cardiovascular Institute has long been a leader in cardiac care, known for providing the latest treatments to improve outcomes for patients across the northeast. However, with rising demand for less invasive procedures, AHN sought to update its facilities to support advanced therapies like Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), which dramatically reduces recovery time and complications for heart valve patients.

As a trusted design partner, CPL was tasked with transforming a cardiology office suite next to Jefferson Hospital’s catheterization lab into a Class 3 hybrid operating room, optimized for complex electrophysiology lab procedures. This involved expanding the lab’s footprint to meet stringent standards set by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, including precise clearances around operating tables, revamped medical gas systems and specialized air exchanges to ensure a sterile environment.

To facilitate these upgrades, our healthcare practice team relocated the cardiology department’s administrative offices to an adjacent space, and overhead water mains were rerouted to eliminate any contamination risks during procedures. The renovation also had a wider impact on patient and hospital workflows, as creating a semi-restricted area required redirecting traffic in public corridors and adjusting patient egress routes.

We maintained close communication with facility administrators throughout the project, redesigning piping and making real-time adjustments during demolition. This collaboration minimized disruptions to hospital operations, ensuring smooth patient care and workflow from kickoff to closeout.

The enhanced electrophysiology lab is now a cornerstone of AHN’s offerings, enabling surgeons to perform advanced, minimally invasive procedures like TAVR while cementing the hospital’s status as a leader in cardiovascular ingenuity. More than just meeting today’s surgical standards, it represents a lasting investment in the future of heart health for the entire community.
