City of Reidsville Celebrates New Splash Pad with Ribbon Cutting

REIDSVILLE, NC — On May 24, 2024, the CPL team joined the Reidsville Mayor Donald Gorham, the Reidsville Chamber of Commerce, public officials and members of the local community to celebrate the ribbon-cutting for a highly anticipated splash pad at 2010 South Scales Street.

The project began in 2020 when the Reidsville City Council sought to enhance residents’ quality of life and engagement. With the availability of American Rescue Plan funding, City staff implemented the Council’s vision to benefit all Reidsville residents. Already a longstanding partner, CPL was chosen to design and deliver the splash pad.

The 2k sq. ft. space facility rests on one acre and joins the 60-acre lower Jaycee Park, which offers playgrounds, a dog park, tennis courts and baseball fields for the general public. The splash pad’s supplementary building provides concessions with snacks and drinks; changing rooms; and public restrooms, while the splash pad itself features various colorful water attractions, including a scorpion, a spray cannon, a turtle and a “super splash” bucket drop, all designed for different ages to enjoy.

“Our goal was to cultivate a lively hub that brings people together and enhances community spirit, particularly in the warmer months,” explained CPL Architect, Joshua Wheeler, AIA, NCARB, who led design as Project Manager. “Moreover, free admission ensures everyone can enjoy this essential amenity, promoting inclusivity and social unity.”

As Architect of Record, CPL provided in-house MEP engineering and collaborated with Jones Engineering (Structural) and Charles Havens (Estimating) to create this exciting amenity. Located in a floodplain, the project also involved WithersRavenel (Civil, Environmental Engineering) to address site and civil engineering challenges.

“We have been able to utilize grant funding to create this water experience for our residents, both young and old,” said Haywood Cloud Jr., Assistant City Manager of Community Services. “We hope people will be able to enjoy the splash pad during the hot days of summer.”

The $1.7M project officially opened to the public on May 24, 2024, immediately following the ceremony.
