Orange County Government Center
Goshen, New York
Client: Orange County, New York
Completion Date: 2018
Total Project Cost: $80 M
As architects and designers, our role on every project is wide-ranging. We need to analyze and understand the built environment, contextual surroundings and history in conjunction with the programmatic necessities for each and every client. Our work for the Orange County Government Center has proven to be no different. Famed modernist Architect Paul Rudolph’s design built in the mid-1960s, stands as a unique structure within the community.
CPL is providing design services for the Rudolph style Government Center building, plus six additional County buildings, one being an 1841 Courthouse still being used. A combination of renovation, demolition and additions will be explored as the team develops a cost effective program to renovate and rebuild the County Government Center and six related buildings. The finalized planning effort is expected to result in an integrated construction program of approximately $80 million.
This project builds on the Assessment of the Physical Condition of the Government Center Building that was completed by CPL and designLAB, which documents both deficiencies and opportunities with the building. The building was damaged by flooding from hurricane Irene and finding a solution to remedy the building’s shortcomings has proven to be both technically and emotionally complex. Nonetheless, through understanding Rudolph’s original design intent, the CPL team has truly enjoyed the process of incorporating his style and translating it into a modern building.
